The Great Smoky Mountains National Park gets its name from the combination of two separate climates within the forest. The conifer forest on the mountain peaks combines with the deciduous forest in the lower elevations and the resulting collision of vegetation and pine tree oil creates a vapor that resembles smoke rising from the trees. The park is also home to an abundance of wildlife, comprised of over 60 species of mammals, 200 species of birds, 80 kinds of reptiles and amphibians, and 70 kinds of fish. Around 400 to 600 mighty black bears also live within the park.
